Description
"Harris's Hawk" by Debbie Oppermann. While out hiking a trail at the Rockwood Conservation Area Ontario Canada we met a man walking with this large Harris's Hawk, Parabuteo unicinctus, on his hand. It's a beautiful raptor with black, chestnut and white feathers, yellow beak and talons. He explained that it is not a pet, it is a hunter. The Bay Winged Hawk or Dusky Hawk is unique among birds of prey as it employs cooperative hunting. The hunting party can be up to six and they pounce on their prey, overwhelming it with numbers. The Harris's Hawk is 18 - 22 inches body length and has a 3 - 4 foot wingspan. It was quite thrilling to capture this Hawk as it is not native to Canada.
