Description
"Pointe Au Baril Lighthouse" by Debbie Oppermann. The Pointe Au Baril Lighthouse on the east coast of Georgian Bay has quite an interesting history. It is named after the "barrel on the point" that originally marked the treacherous entry to the main channel from the open water of Georgian Bay. Early fur traders lost a canoe near the point and their canoe contained a barrel of whiskey that was found by stranded traders the next spring. After a drinking spree, the barrel was left on the point as a beacon. Later this marker was improved to hold a lantern in the barrel that would be lit by the first fisherman returning inland. The point is now lit by an automated lighthouse as the lighthouse was destaffed in 1983.
