Description
"Twilight Feeding Muskrat" by Debbie Oppermann. The Muskrat, Ondatra zibethicus is a medium sized semi aquatic rodent native to North America. They are covered in brown short thick fur. The fur has two layers which helps protect them from the cold water. They have long tails covered with scales and to aid them in swimming , are slightly flattened vertically, which is a shape unique to them. Muskrats are active at night or near dawn and dusk. They eat aquatic vegetation and mussels, frogs, crayfish and fish. Image taken at Moon River Ontario Canada.
