Description
"A Rare Sighting" by Debbie Oppermann. I had no idea what this awesome optical phenomenon was called when we saw it while out in the boat in the French River Delta, Georgian Bay Ontario Canada. This brightly colored spectrum band was a definite "wow." It is called a circumhorizontal arc, ice halo, that is parallel to the horizon, and is a refraction from the sun on the ice crystals in the cirrus or cirrostratus clouds and can be seen when the sun is at it's highest, which in this case was just after 12:00 noon. It was an amazing bright display of red, yellow, green and blue and such a thrill to see.
