Description
"Black Backed Woodpecker" by Debbie Oppermann. An uncommon woodpecker of the northern coniferous forests, the Black-backed Woodpecker prefers burned-over sites. It moves from place to place, following outbreaks of wood-boring beetles in recently burned habitats. Dead conifers with large areas of peeled bark generally indicate the presence of this uncommon woodpecker. The Black-backed Woodpecker (Picoides arcticus) is known by two other names: the Arctic Three-toed Woodpecker, and more commonly, the Three-Toed Woodpecker. It was quite exciting to spot both the male and in this image the female at the Key River Ontario Canada.
