Description
"Curious Porcupine" by Debbie Oppermann. After having no luck spotting wildlife on this beautiful, sunny autumn day at the arboretum in Guelph Ontario Canada, we decided to take a trail we had not been on in a long time. Well lucky for us we spotted not one, but two Porcupines in the trees. This one was sitting in a Black Walnut tree and it's head would shift from side to side of the branch to keep an eye on us. Their long strands of brown hair looks soft but thousands of quills are tucked inside. Each quill is hollow, yellowish in color with a black tip and covered in tiny barbs and this is their protection against predators. It is said that each Porcupine has over 30,000 quills! They are excellent climbers and trees are their habitat.
