Description
"Map Turtle I" by Debbie Oppermann. I was thrilled to spot this Northern Map Turtle, a species of concern, in the Shawanaga Bay, Georgian Bay Ontario Canada. These Northern Map Turtles, at the slightest hint of danger, slip in to the water. The Map Turtles are a freshwater turtle and the light markings on the shell resemble the contours of a map, hence the name. They like large bodies of water and areas with fallen trees, are carnivorous and feed on molluscs, insects and crayfish. This reptile was enjoying the sunny day as it soaked up the sun on a deadhead in the calm water. It is always a thrill to see turtles as they are one of my favorite animals.
