Description
"Map Turtle Swimming" by Debbie Oppermann. I was thrilled to spot this Northern Map Turtle, a species of concern, in the Shawanaga Bay, Georgian Bay Ontario Canada. Having just slipped into the water, the Map Turtle hung around close to the log it had been sunning on in the hopes that we were leaving soon, which we did. The Map Turtles are a freshwater turtle and the light markings on the shell resemble the contours of a map, hence the name. They like large bodies of water and areas with fallen trees, are carnivorous and feed on molluscs, insects and crayfish. It is always a thrill to see turtles as they are one of my favorite animals.
