"Muskrat And Cattails" by Debbie Oppermann. The Muskrat, Ondatra zibethicus is a medium sized semi aquatic rodent native to North America. They are covered in brown, short, thick fur. The fur has two layers which helps protect them from the cold water. They have long tails covered with scales and to aid them in swimming, and are slightly flattened vertically, which is a shape unique to them. Muskrats are active at night or near dawn and dusk this one was paddling in the early evening as it swims across the roadside pond past the cattails in Guelph Ontario Canada. They eat aquatic vegetation and mussels, frogs, crayfish and fish.
