Description
"Muskrat Chewing A Reed" by Debbie Oppermann. The Muskrat, Ondatra zibethicus is a medium sized semi aquatic rodent native to North America. They are covered in brown, short, thick fur. The fur has two layers which helps protect them from the cold water. They have long tails covered with scales and to aid them in swimming, and are slightly flattened vertically, which is a shape unique to them. Muskrats are active at night or near dawn and dusk and this one was chewing a reed in the early evening at the roadside pond in Guelph Ontario Canada. They eat aquatic vegetation and mussels, frogs, crayfish and fish.
