Description
"Red Rock Lighthouse I" by Debbie Oppermann. Approximately three kilometers from Franklin Island, Georgian Bay, Ontario Canada, the Red Rock Lighthouse rests on a flat section of reddish granite smoothed by centuries of waves rolling over it's surface and is a beacon to boaters as it marks the entrance to the main channel to Parry Sound. Originally built of wood in the 1800's, it was battered by the high waves and had to be reinforced. In 1894 and new foundation was built using a steel cylinder filled with stone masonry and cement. In the 1970's a helicopter pad was installed above the lantern so the lighthouse could be maintained as it is only accessible by boat.
