Description
"Through The Open Windows" by Debbie Oppermann. The stonework of the ruins of the old historic stone Rockwood Woolen Mill in the Rockwood Conservation Area Ontario Canada is just beautiful. The original Harris Woolen Mill started in 1867 and was powered by the water of the Eramosa River, steam and hydro. The mill was damaged by fire in the early 1880's and replaced in 1884 with the stone structure. Between 1915 - 1918 the owners secured vast orders for Canadian Army blankets and operated 24 hours a day. The mill eventually closed its doors in 1924 due to increasing competition. The G.R.C.A., Grand River Conservation Authority, acquired the mill and land in 1959 and formed the Rockwood Conservation Area. This area has fantastic hiking trails in all seasons, a small swimming and camping area for the summer visitors. It is also a popular area for weddings.
