Description
"Turkey Vulture" by Debbie Oppermann. The Turkey Vulture, cathartes aura, or Buzzard, is a scavenger that feeds on carrion and is not a pretty bird. In fact it is ugly, but I'm sure it's Mama loves it. It is unique among vultures in that it finds carrion by smell as well as sight. When threatened it defends itself by vomiting powerful stomach acids. It is black with brownish tones and has a red head with ivory bill. They can soar the wind currents for hours without flapping their wings. This vulture was perched on a tree branch at Lake Belwood Ontario Canada.
