Description
"Turkey Vulture In Maple Tree In Spring" by Debbie Oppermann. The Turkey Vulture, cathartes aura, or Buzzard, is a scavenger that feeds on carrion and is not a pretty bird. In fact it is ugly, but I'm sure it's Mama loves it. It is unique among vultures in that it finds carrion by smell as well as sight. When threatened it defends itself by vomiting powerful stomach acids. It is black with brownish tones and has a red head with ivory bill. They can soar the wind currents for hours without flapping their wings. This bored looking vulture was perched on a maple tree branch in rural Guelph Ontario Canada.
