"Fox In The Woodpile" by Debbie Oppermann. When I heard that my daughter's neighbours had spotted Red Fox kits at a shed near their house I pretty much flew out to check it out. Of course they were not playing outside, so over the course of a few days and about six hours of waiting I was rewarded for my patience by finally getting to see them and the parent(s). I had seen the parent or parents a couple times but not sure which one as after the cubs’ eyes are open and they begin to crawl, the dog fox will relieve the vixen while she hunts. Both parents hunt for themselves and bring back small game for the cubs to play with. When the young are able to feed themselves, usually at about three months of age, they leave the den site alone. This parent was deciding whether to leave and go hunting or hang around. The decision was made a few minutes later, when it knew I was no threat, as it decided to go and grab some tasty morsels!
