Description
"Leucistic Mallard II" by Debbie Oppermann. There was a bird report that a Leucistic female Mallard was at the Speed and Eramosa River confluence in Guelph Ontario Canada, so of course I was there the next day searching for this rare, unique duck. She was hard to miss. The gleaming creamy white plumage just stood out in the crowd of waterfowl. She was just gorgeous. Leucism is an inherited disorder in which the deposition of melanin is disrupted. Leucistic birds may have completely white plumage or only a few white feathers. As beautiful as she is, the mallard's lack of pigment makes her a mark for predators and as a result leucistic ducks don't tend to live as long as their brown feathered sisters, which often adds to their rarity.
