"Merganser Antics" by Debbie Oppermann. The cinnamon headed female Common Merganser is one of my favorite ducks. I love their coloring with reddish brown head, gray plumage and red bill, the graceful elegance as they glide on the water riding low with their streamlined bodies. With this Merganser, she was a little crazy racing back and forth in front of the boat. We had thought that maybe she was trying to draw us away from babies, but we couldn't see any babies anywhere.Then again, maybe she was just having some fun racing and splashing in the river before the sun went down!
