Description
"The Cornfield Saunter" by Debbie Oppermann. Driving on rural roads near Elora Ontario Canada, I was pleased to see a few wild Turkeys feeding in a harvested cornfield at the edge of a forest. Of course as soon as I stopped they headed for cover in the nearby woods. Wild turkeys were extirpated (locally extinct) from Ontario as a result of habitat loss and over-hunting. Reintroduction efforts began in 1984. Turkeys are now a common sight in southern Ontario and they are continuing to expand their range. Did you know that turkeys have over 6,000 feathers and that they can run up to 19km per hour? They are classed as ground birds but they do fly up into trees to roost for the night.
