Description
"Winter Junco" by Debbie Oppermann. Lovely Dark Eyed Junco perches on the stems of the spent, snow covered, autumn Asters while feeding on the seeds, in Guelph Ontario Canada. The adult Dark Eyed Juncos, Junco hymalis, generally have gray heads, necks and breasts, gray or brown back and wings and a white belly. They are unique sparrows that nest on or near the ground at the forest edges as well as being quite common in our backyards. Their most familiar call is a musical trill that's performed at the same pitch. They are ground feeders and eat mostly insects. The Dark Eyed Juncos play important ecosystem roles by helping with seed dispersal and controlling insect populations.
