"Sure Sign Of Spring" by Debbie Oppermann. One of the first signs of spring is the arrival of the Red Winged Blackbird and one of the first places to see them is perched on a cattail or bulrush in the marsh or pond, although in this case, the songbird was perched on the budding branch of a tree along the Speed River Guelph Ontario Canada.The males are a deep, glossy black with red and yellow epaulets and are a welcome sight after a long winter. The females will follow in about a month as the males come first to stake out their territory.
