Description
"Three Flickers" by Debbie Oppermann. The Northern Flicker is a large handsome colorful woodpecker with beautiful plumage. They are brown with black scalloped plumage, black spots, bars, crescents and red stripe. Their call is a sustained laugh, ki ki ki ki, and much nicer than the Pileated Woodpecker. Like most woodpeckers, northern flickers drum on objects as a form of communication and territory defense. In such cases, the object is to make as loud a noise as possible, so woodpeckers sometimes drum on metal objects. Flickers are also the only Woodpeckers that frequently feed on the ground probing with their beak. In this image there are three Woodpeckers at the nest cavity high up a tree in the woods at the arboretum in Guelph Ontario Canada.
